Week 8

4 July 2014

This week is very much routine work. Here's a rough schedule of my week.

7:30 am Breakfast
9 am Start sweeping the terrace/ wipe the tables/ vacuum the restaurant/ wipe the windows/ wash the toilet/ scrub the bathroom/ vacuum the corridor/ guestrooms/ doing the dishes/ clean the kitchen/ weeding outdoors/ gathering the grass and moving them to the compost/ fertilising the plants

11 am Restaurant is open for business.
12 pm Lunch
4 pm End work お疲れ様でした。
6:30 pm Dinner

The work listed here exclude outdoor work. Due to my language inadequacy and not so athletic physique, I think these are the work more suitable for me. There are tons of activities my host do based on the seasons. For example, I learnt that June is the only month when bamboo shoots are available for harvest. So they had to be picked and preserved. No wonder my host were picking them like there's no tomorrow.

The weather has turned cool and visitors coming for summer activities are increasing. It's a very family-orientated business so the outdoor activities are popular with families with young kids. The same staff (4 full-time staff who work flexible hours) who help in the restaurant also work outdoors on a rotational basis.

An unusual sighting for me are the flags placed outside most dining establishments. Their purpose is to guide passing drivers/ people in. Their cafes or restaurants are quite hard to spot as they blend in with the residential.

That said, this pretty sum up what I do weekly. Apart from these, living with the family does not constitute to just those work duties. As and when I find that help is necessary, I will ask my host if they needed help. Quite similar to how we go about doing things at home. We will take initiative to help our family members if they are needy.

They don't sit back and relax while we (the staff) do all the work. They appear very hands-on and of course charged with abundant energy. Sometimes I feel as though I am the senior citizen instead.

A significant difference in their work and mine would be the feeling of staying at home when you are actually working. Their residential and work place are so close, or rather in the same premise. Farming and cafes are common here and most of the owners reside nearby. While I had to travel further to work in Singapore, I wonder how if feels to work from home (A mental note that working from home during the weekend is a separate issue).
