Week 1

16 May 2014

Today would mark my first week of 'wwoofing' experience! I found my Japanese host through wwoofJapan. Its expanded form stands for World Wide Opportunity on Organic Farm. My host is a husband and wife team who runs a restaurant, hostel and outdoor activities. They call themselves Bouken Kazoku which means Adventure Family. Both are in their 60s and like the Japanese whom I have met so far, they are committed to their work and strive to provide the best experience to their consumers.

Apart from cleaning duties, I got to follow Otoosan outdoor to the woods. They are getting ready for outdoor summer activities by building a playground. Similar to our version of Outward Bounds Singapore except that they do it from scratch by clearing the land...

I worked for 6 hours daily from 9am to 4pm with an hour of lunch break in between. Mondays and Thursdays are my off days so I get to explore the town on my own. It's more than enough time for me to explore Kutchan town on my own. My mode of transport is a trusty bicycle and I'm more than happy because the bus service is infrequent in the countryside.

When faced with a width this wide, there is no problem. However, ...

When confronted with a width this narrow, I have to dismount and push the bike along because I'm still a novice cyclist. The oncoming drivers are nice enough to avoid me by moving more towards the center line.

My ideal cyclist for travelling 10km would look like this...

Not by pushing the bike...

That said, how can I not share some photos of my destination!
